Scriptures of the World

A compilation of the 2,167 languages in which at least one Book of the Bible has been published since the Bible was first printed by Johann Gutenberg (Edited by Liana Lupas and Erroll F. Rhodes, © 1995 United Bible Societies).

This database contains the names of 2,167 languages and dialects in which Scriptures have been published. By searching the database, you will be able to find the dates when the first publication of a single book of the Bible, the New Testament, and a complete Bible occurred. (Note: In the languages where the Old Testament was published before the New Testament, this date is listed.) The database also identifies the language or dialect by the country or countries of primary or original use and then by political subdivision or geographical area.

The spelling of language names, especially of those which are in non-roman scripts, is subject to a considerable amount of variation. Every attempt has been made to standardize the names in accordance with current UBS practice. Note that in the special case of the Bantu languages of Africa, prefixes are given in lower case and the roots are identified by an upper case letter; the languages are alphabetized by prefix.

In order to simplify the process of finding a language in the database, all known spellings and forms of the language names have been stored.

Scriptures of the World in printed format

The Scriptures of the World database contains information taken from the UBS publication of the same name. Very few printed copies remain available with some local Bible Societies.

Information contained in the printed version, but not held in this database, includes:

  • A chronological list of scriptures published.
  • A geographical list of scriptures published.
  • An extensive collection of maps, showing the location of primary or original use of each language.
