SAT-7 studio in Cairo destroyed by fire

CAIRO, EgyptSAT-7, the not-for-profit organisation which broadcasts God’s Word to mainly Arab satellite television viewers in the Middle East and North Africa, has seen fire destroy the Regional Television Production Studio at its media centre in Cairo. The centre, which is part of SAT-7’s partnership with more than 30 agencies, including the United Bible Societies and Campus Crusade for Christ, had only been operating since mid-January (see World Report 368/6).

The cause of the fire, which destroyed all the contents of the studio, has not yet been established. There was smoke and water damage to much of the rest of the building, but it is hoped that parts of it can be reopened quite soon. Initial estimates suggest that damage to equipment alone is worth more than US$400,000, according to J B Kump, Regional Director of SAT-7 North America, who has stated that donations to cover the cost of replacing equipment will be “most welcome,” as there will be some losses not covered by insurance.

SAT-7’s international Chief Executive Officer Terence Ascott has also called on supporters to be “in prayer for the Egypt team as they handle this very disappointing development.” He expressed the hope that this incident “will in fact turn out to be for the good of the Kingdom” and that it will “strengthen team unity and our ties with the Christian community in Egypt - many of whom have already expressed their sincere sympathy and concern.” His views were echoed by Ron Ensminger, Executive Director of SAT-7 North America, who said, “We believe the Lord can use this tragedy for good.” (272 words - EGYPT.13.09.02)
