Gospel broadcast in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba — Sunday May 4 in Cuba saw the broadcast of The Gospel According to Mark on a radio station which normally broadcasts classical music from 8.00am until 10.00pm.

The programme was dedicated to Mothers’ Day which was on the following Sunday. Pastor Estela Hernandez of William Carey Baptist Church, in Havana’s Vedado district, was the preacher.

The radio station concerned, CMBF, goes out only on FM since new equipment is currently being installed for medium wave broadcasts. Nevertheless the Rev José López, Secretary of the Bible Commission of the Council of Churches of Cuba, was very excited.

“Please tell your pastors, church members, friends, neighbours and families!” he urged before the broadcast.

The Bible Commission also held a four-day Bible Sciences Workshop for church pastors, lay evangelists and denominational leaders, earlier this month. Led by two United Bible Societies translation consultants, Alfredo Tepox from Mexico and Dr Marlon Winedt from the Netherlands Antilles, it took place in a Baptist church in Guantanamo.

The activities of the Bible Commission are like those of any other national Bible Society, but it works under the auspices of the Cuban Council of Churches. (190 words - CUBA.15.05.03)
