Hungarian Bible Society recruits support
among Christian teenagers

TATA, Hungary — Although the Lutheran Church has been playing a vital role in the work of the Hungarian Bible Society for almost 60 years, not many teenage Lutheran adherents know this. In an attempt to remedy the situation, the Society adopted a high-level presence at a recent Lutheran Youth Festival, for it sees making young people into supporters as vital to its future work.

Part of the Society's strategy involves educating young people about the products which it supplies, so it was among a number of Christian organisations and publishers displaying their wares, both printed and audio, at the 'Szélrózsa' festival, held in Tata, northwest Hungary, over July 21-25. As well as displaying products, the Society also held screenings of the Jesus film.

Another way of making contact with the younger generation was through two talks given during the week by Bible Society representatives. New General Secretary the Rev Ottó Pecsuk spoke about the 200-year history of the Bible Society movement and its connections with the modern history of the Hungarian Bible, while Dr Sándor Cserháti, senior member of the Board and one of the translators of the Hungarian Revised New Translation, gave a talk about the secrets of Bible translation.

Having enjoyed a positive response from the young Christians at this festival, the Society believes that events of this kind will become "a new way to reach the Christian teenagers in Hungary," according to Mr Pecsuk. (244 words - HUNGARY.05.08.2004)
