READING, England — United Bible Societies (UBS) has named the Rev A. Miller Milloy as its new General Secretary. The appointment was announced by the UBS Global Board at its meeting in São Paulo, Brazil, earlier this month.

Mr Milloy, 58, has been the UBS Acting General Secretary since January this year, following the departure of the former General Secretary, Neil Crosbie.

Commenting on the appointment, the Chair of the Global Board, Sally Shoemaker Robinson, said, "We are delighted to have been able to make this appointment. Miller made a great contribution to the work of UBS in leading the Europe-Middle East Region, and as UBS Acting General Secretary he has shown conclusively over the past 11 months that he has much more to offer at what is in many ways a decisive time for the movement."

One of Mr Milloy's major tasks as Acting General Secretary was to organise August's UBS World Assembly, when 300 delegates from 142 national Bible Societies gathered to celebrate the Bible Society movement's bicentenary and to determine its direction over the next few years.

Originally from Ayrshire, south west Scotland, he joined UBS in 1997 as Regional Secretary of its Europe-Middle East Region. In that role he was active in developing relationships between UBS and the Orthodox Churches.

After his appointment, Mr Milloy said the Fellowship had bestowed on him a great honour and a great responsibility.

"As I begin to come to terms with all the demands of this new office," he said, "I ask for your patience, your understanding and your prayers. In return, I pledge you my fullest support."

Prior to being appointed to head the Europe-Middle East Region, Mr Milloy was an Adviser in Mission and Evangelism for the Church of Scotland. He was ordained in 1979 after completing his theological studies at Glasgow University, and until 1992 served in pastoral ministry. He is married with two grown-up children.
