CAPE TOWN, South Africa — The Bible
Society of South Africa (BSSA) has published the first large-print
Bible in Southern Sotho, one of the nation’s official languages, to help
the visually-impaired read the Word of God. The Rev Donald Tolmie, General
Secretary of the BSSA, said that according to research there were three
times as many visually-impaired as there were blind people, and they would
not be able to read the type-size in the standard Sotho Bible. There are
more than two million Southern Sotho speakers in South Africa. Currently
the BSSA makes available four large-print Bibles, including Tswana (Central),
English and Afrikaans. Eventually, the BSSA hopes to publish large-print
editions of all eleven official languages.
