BEIRUT, Lebanon Father Antoine Gemayel, Director of the Catholic Centre for Information, can recite from memory the names of the 18 religious communities in Lebanon, 12 of them Christian. But while he acknowledges the diversity of churches in the region, Fr Antoine, along with other Christian leaders, places the Word of God at the centre of his faith.
I know the Gospel by heart, he said. To deepen my faith I read St Paul. He also regards the Bible Society as a working example of inter-church unity. The Bible Society is for everybody, said Fr Antoine, who has worked in partnership with the Bible Society for many years. Every year we produce a Scripture calendar with the Bible Society, who also provide us with 20,000 [Scripture Portions] annually at an excellent price for distribution to first communicants. Father Antoine died on January 7 at the age of 64 after a lifetime of service to the Christian church and to the Bible cause.
