Scriptures Reach Iraqi Christians Despite Setbacks

Bishop Touma of the Ancient Church of the East in Mosul helps unload the Bible Society ScripturesBAGHDAD, Iraq — Despite many setbacks, more than 200,000 Scriptures were officially imported into Iraq and distributed to delighted Christians and churches in time for Christmas last year. The distribution trip, from November 16 to December 9, brought hope to many Christians around the country who live in difficult circumstances. The distribution team from the Bible Societies in Lebanon and Jordan was joined by volunteers from Open Doors and Trans World Radio. “Wherever we went we heard about the harsh living conditions, but it was so encouraging to meet young children learning about Jesus and worshipping God in these trying circumstances,” said Salim Qubain, Distribution Secretary with the Bible Society in Jordan. “We were overjoyed to be distributing the Word of Life to so many eager and grateful people.” The distribution trip was beset with problems from the start. Once through Iraqi customs, trucks carrying Scriptures broke down or had accidents en route, and torrential rain, which left some parts of the country flooded, damaged some of the boxes of Scriptures.
