Bible Society of Zambia seeks ways
to provide free Bibles

LUSAKA, Zambia — The Bible Society of Zambia is facing new challenges as it seeks to meet the needs of millions of people suffering poverty and starvation.

According to General Secretary Mpundu Mutala, drought has destroyed the country’s staple food, maize. “Since farming is the basic source of income for the Zambian majority,” he says, “many people are literally unable to raise enough money to feed themselves.” HIV/AIDS also poses serious problems, while the poor state of the country’s roads is hampering food distribution.

The Bible Society is hoping to raise local support to provide Scriptures free or at reduced prices, recognising that many people can no longer afford a Bible. Mr Mutala emphasises that “the Society is aware that in the midst of such devastating needs, the people’s search and hunger for God is heightened. We would like to help to satisfy this need.” (WR 371/10 - 10.02) e-209
