Bible Society of Zimbabwe sees potential for ‘making connection between material and spiritual needs’

HARARE, Zimbabwe — A new research team established by the Bible Society of Zimbabwe will be “ahead of the pack” in providing Scriptures for victims of the famine in Southern Africa, according to General Secretary Edward Mutema. He believes that there is good potential for making a connection between meeting people’s material needs – work being undertaken by the Society’s partner Christian Care – and their spiritual needs.

The distribution of food has brought communities together, and the Society is already developing a Selection on the theme of reconciliation to encourage this trend. It will particularly target women and young people, “the pulse of our society”.

However, funding problems and regulatory burdens are reducing Scripture supplies at the very time when demand is soaring. Mr Mutema emphasises that “we need God’s Word now in order to ensure that we provide spiritual food to those who are hungry and, in some cases, dying.”
