Arkventure project to bring Bible to Dutch children via multimedia

HAARLEM, Netherlands — One of the latest practical outcomes of the Netherlands Bible Society’s commitment to using the latest multimedia technology to bring God’s Word to people in a modern and attractive way is a Bible exhibition for children aged between nine and 12.

The Arkventure Bible Explorer project, which was presented to the press in December and got under way in January, uses a specially designed and equipped 25m trailer. The trailer, which can hold up to 36 children at a time, will travel to schools across the country for the next three years.

Space journey

The children who visit the trailer first watch a film in which they see Arkventure, piloted by a character named Archie, going on a journey through space. After Arkventure crashes, the children have to help Archie find his way back. They are split into teams to play six 10-minute computer games with Bible themes, including the language of the Bible, the Bible in art and the distribution of the Bible, and have to identify a code. Overall, the Arkventure experience lasts one-and-a-half hours.

The Bible Society consulted teachers in both public and Roman Catholic schools during the development of Arkventure, and found that they were very enthusiastic about the project. They will benefit from a manual to support their involvement with Arkventure, while participating children will receive a workbook.

Teachers

Both children and teachers can gain access to further information through a dedicated Arkventure web site, which will also display the scores achieved by each school.

The Bible Society aims to reach 30,000 children through Arkventure, but will also make the facility available to others, such as members of Bible study and other church groups. (WR 375/33 - 3.03)
