ABS supplies all Habitat for Humanity BiblesUNITED STATES Throughout its 30-year history, Habitat for Humanity, the charity which builds and renovates simple homes with and for homeowning families, has always given a Bible to new homeowners in the United States when presenting them with the keys to their house. Now, thanks to a renewed partnership with the American Bible Society (ABS), Habitat will receive as many Bibles as they need, free of charge, to give to families across the country. While ABS has donated Bibles to Habitat in the past, both organisations are eager to renew and expand the partnership. It is our pleasure and our privilege to provide the Bible to Habitat homeowners, said Emilio Reyes, vice president of Domestic Ministries at ABS. As these families resurrect their lives from the trials of poverty housing, they may also resurrect their spiritual lives through the Habitat Bible. We are honoured to be a part of that. Habitat built more than 25,000 houses in the United States in 2005 and has responded to the damage that Hurricane Katrina wrought last year by creating a new department, Operation Home Delivery, to co-ordinate hurricane recovery in the Gulf Coast. ABS sent the first shipment of 200 Bibles late last year and will replace them continuously. Bibles will normally be in the Contemporary English Version and its Spanish equivalent, but Bibles in other languages will be made available on request. Eventually, the Bible Society wants to print Bibles bearing the Habitat for Humanity logo on the cover and a special message inside. Presenting a Bible at a house dedication is a holy moment, says Rick Beech, director of Church Relations at Habitat International. It sends an important message that Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry. In donating each Bible, the American Bible Society becomes an integral ministry partner. (WR 400/6 - 03.06) |
