PHILIPPINES — A new product from the Philippine Bible Society has already won much applause from both Church leaders and the media. As well as being a very convenient way to read the Scriptures, the E-Bible is the first product of its kind to offer translations in both English and local languages.

In a recent interview, Bishop Efraim Tendero, National Director of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) and President and Board Chair of the Bible Society, highlighted the importance of this innovative product.

“The E-Bible will help us to understand the Bible better, as it does not only have English translations, but also translations in the vernacular.”

He went on to stress that the E-Bible “will greatly aid the deeper study of God’s Word, which is now literally at our fingertips.”

Convenient format

Bishop Tendero’s views are shared by PCEC Board Chair Bishop Fred Magbanua.

“The E-Bible is a much-needed tool for pastors and Bible students alike,” he says. “It will particularly help those who do not have access to libraries or other materials.”

The convenient format of the E-Bible is the feature that particularly appeals to Father Oscar Alunday, Executive Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Biblical Apostolate of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

“Volume upon volume of Bible versions and translations have been compacted into one disc. At the click of a button, I can see different versions or translations. I can copy these directly into other documents, either in English or in any of the major Philippine languages.”

The E-Bible was launched in July during celebrations at the Greenhills Christian Fellowship in Pasig City to mark PCEC’s 42nd anniversary. Its arrival on the market attracted extensive newspaper and television coverage.

“The E-Bible is yet another solid step to fulfilling the Bible Society’s mission: to achieve the widest possible effective and meaningful distribution of the Scriptures in media and formats that meet the needs of our people,” General Secretary Nora Lucero said at the launch. “The Bible Society cannot allow God’s Word to be left behind in these modern times.”

Along with four English translations and translations in the eight major Philippine languages, the E-Bible features a concordance, a mini-dictionary, a Bible reading plan and a notepad. (WR 407/4 - 12.06) [1 photo]
