‘As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God’

The first verse of Psalm 42 seems to sum up the attitude of David Okpala to getting his hands on a Bible in Braille. Mr Okpala, who is blind, travelled all the way from his home in Port Harcourt, south east Nigeria, to the Bible Society of Nigeria’s head office in Lagos, a distance of some hundreds of miles, in search of a Braille Bible in April.

Mr Okpala lost his sight to glaucoma in 1987. Two operations that he had while his sight was failing could not reverse the deterioration. Interviewed for the Bible Society’s magazine Sower, he said, “I am visually handicapped, but because I have an interest in knowing the Lord, I was searching for where I could get a Braille Bible – until somebody directed me to the Bible Society of Nigeria.” (WR 407/20 - 12.06)
